EAT, SLEEP, HOOP...REPEAT: Symoné
Symoné is a performance artist whose incredible skill set includes: professional hula hoop performer and instructor, cabaret artist, choreographer, voguer and rollerskater. Not bad goings, A clodhopper can only boast a long handstand, a great cocktail and keeping it together under the influence. And our lacklustre super powers are further to put to shame by the fact that Symoné holds the Guinness world record, along the with ‘The Majorettes’, for 'most hoops spun simultaneously as a group'...she alone can spin 40 (yes FORTY) hoops on her body at once. Oh the envy and sheer joy to see the videos, performances and imagery around this talented woman trained by Marawa the Amazing. A woman who has worked with Marawa’s troupe ‘The Majorettes’, Chivaree Circus and Gypsy Disco also performing solo around the world and United Kingdom. It’s amazing how far a hoola hoop can take you...
Symoné has a unique duality to her too, on stage she is fierce, aggressive, sexual and provocative - yet personally the Yang to that Ying is a self awareness and contemplative philosopher in dormant, evident in a blogpost about her growing success as an artist “I would hope that monetary value and fame does not measure success of your life path, and that you’re driven by passion. This entire time since I’ve found the art of performing I have felt success.” Juxtapose this reflection with a recent performance for LGBT & Queer Art & Culture Cabaret ‘Wotever’, performing to a mix including M.I.A’s paper planes, her look completed with a Beyonce ‘On The Run Tour’ style balaclava, she starts as the chartreuse, moving onto finessing her hoops on her arms and leg simultaneously, culminating in a ferocious multi-hoop fit that ends to the sound of gunshots as two people pretend to shoot her! Argh - it’s exquisite to be taken on such a journey on stage but also one to admire with the quiet knowledge of what lies below the persona of Symoné as the artist.
Whilst performing and perfecting her craft Symoné also does classes varying from one-hour intensive hoop ‘werkouts’ teaching the basics and a few multiple hoop moves. As well as more technical classes helping you learn tricks and flow in between movements. A phenomenal output considering her growing success and schedule as a performer and one that serves as a lesson we can all learn here: creative energy can be turned into anything you want. Or to quote the inspirational human being who goes by the name Symoné “You know, that is actually the beauty, you can make anything if you want to. If you want to believe you’re born special, sure okay. Honestly, just create yourself into something and whatever else those cliche mugs say to do.” EAT, SLEEP, HOOP...REPEAT Miss Symoné, A Clodhopper will be watching and admiring!
